Australia and Japan have agreed to expand defence equipment and technical co-operation during meetings in Tokyo on 16 October between Japanese defence minister Akinori Eto and his visiting counterpart David Johnston.
A spokesman from the Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) told IHS Jane's that the agreement covers a number of potential equipment and technical co-operation activities, including those centred on Australia's Project SEA 1000 Future Submarine programme and both countries' procurement of Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter aircraft.
He added that details related to these two programmes are yet to be finalised. "In the meeting it was agreed to expand defence equipment and technical co-operation, but the details about individual activities will be further studied at a working level," he said.
